NATIONAL ISRAEL IN PROPHECY
The main focus of almost all biblical prophecy is on the 12 tribes of national Israel. These prophecies show that all of these tribes will play a major part in the fulfillment of many prophecies concerning world events before and after Jesus returns to establish the kingdom of God on earth.
The Bible nowhere teaches or even implies that any of the 12 tribes of nations will cease to exist as national entities. In fact, the Bible clearly shows that these people are still God's chosen people through whom he is working out his awesome plan for the salvation of humanity. The question is where are these people and what are their national identities today?
The two major keys that unlock almost all biblical prophecy are understanding the importance of the various tribes of national Israel in relation to the Sovereign God's awesome plan for humanity and who and where the majority of these tribes are located today. Without this understanding it is impossible to reconcile the prophecies concerning national Israel with the reality of history, the events of the end of the age, and humanity's future after Christ's return.
The patriarch Abraham was given an unconditional promise by the Creator God that through him all nations on earth would be blessed. The Creator God told him that this blessing would flow through the descendants of his son Isaac who was born from his wife Sarah, but not through his first son Ishmael who was born from Sarah's servant Hagar:
“Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him” (Gen.18:18-19 NIV).
“The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, ”I swear by myself, declares the Lord , that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me" (Gen.22:15-18 NIV).
Rebekah's family spoke to her of God's promise to Abraham as she left to become Isaac's wife.
“And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men. And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, You are our sister, be you the mother of thousands of millions, and let your seed possess the gate of those which hate them” (Gen.24:59-60 KJV).
Isaac repeated this promise to Jacob:
“And his father Isaac said to him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son. And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed: Therefore God give you of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: Let people serve you , and nations bow down to you : be Lord over your brethren, and let your mother's sons bow down to you : cursed be every one that curses you , and blessed be he that blesses you ” (Gen.27:26-29 KJV). See also Gen.28:37; 28:3-4, 12-15).
God reminded Jacob of his promise when he renamed him Israel:
“And God said to him, your name is Jacob: your name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be your name: and he called his name Israel. And God said to him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of you , and kings shall come out of your loins; And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to you I will give it, and to your seed after you will I give the land” (Gen.35:10-12 KJV).
Biblical prophecy clearly shows that the Creator God's original promise to Abraham will reach its final fulfillment through the descendants of the patriarch Israel:
“Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran. When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth , with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the Lord, and he said: ”I am the Lord , the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth , and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you" (Gen.28:10-15 NIV).
In order to understand where the world is headed in the near future, it is important to know the identity of the nations of Israel as they exist today. When most people think of national Israel, they think of the Jewish nation of Israel in Palestine; however, the Jewish nation of Israel is not the national Israel that is spoken of in many biblical prophecies. The Jewish nation of Israel is only a very small part of national Israel.
It is an historical fact that all twelve tribes of national Israel exist in today's world. The so-called lost ten tribes of Israel are not lost; these tribes have grown into nations that can be easily identified. Biblical and secular history and the genealogy of the royal families of Europe provide the information necessary to identify the nations of Israel today, as well as the identity of the lawful monarch who presently reigns on the throne of David over the twelve tribes of the kingdom of Israel.
A Promise to National Israel
“This is what the Lord says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the Lord Almighty is his name: ”Only if these decrees vanish from my sight," declares the Lord , “will the descendants of Israel ever cease to be a nation before me.” This is what the Lord says: “Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done,” declares the Lord “ (Jer.31:35-37 NIV).
The Creator God said that national Israel would never cease to be a nation and that he would never reject them as his chosen people.
Rulership and Birthright
“As for the sons of Israel's oldest son Reuben, Reuben dishonored his father by sleeping with one of his father's wives; therefore, his birthright was given to the sons of his half brother, Joseph. So the official genealogy is not reckoned according to the birthright—Judah prevailed above his brothers and from him the chief ruler was to come, but the birthright Joseph's” (1.Chron.5:1-2 Para.).
This prophecy shows that the principal ruler of national Israel must always come from the tribe of Judah (Gen.49:10), and that the birthright inheritance of wealth and prosperity would to be given to the tribe of Joseph through his sons Ephraim and Menasseh (Gen.48:1-6; 49:26).
The Promise to King David
The Creator God made many unconditional promises that were not tied to the performance of people or their descendants. One of these promises was made to King David. He was promised that one of his descendants would continue to be the legal monarch of the tribes of Israel forever, even into the future beyond Christ's return to rule the earth:
“That night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying: ”Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the Lord says: . . I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of the earth . . . . Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.' Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation" (2.Sam.7:4;9;16-17 NIV). See also 1.Chron.17:16-27.
“And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever” (1.Kgs.2:45 KJV).
“I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known your faithfulness to all generations. For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: your faithfulness shall you establish in the very heavens. I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn to David my servant, your seed will I establish for ever, and build up your throne to all generations. Selah” (Psa.89:1-4 KJV).
“For this says the Lord ; David shall never lack a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel” (Jer.33:17 KJV).
The Messiah and David's Throne
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this" (Isa.9:6-7 NIV).
“And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give to him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end” (Lk.1:31-33 KJV).
Prophecies clearly show that the Messiah will ascend to the throne of David and rule forever. However, David's throne must exist before this can happen .
The Promise to the Twelve
The twelve disciples were promised that they would reign with Christ over the tribes of Israel when he begins to rule the earth:
“Then Peter said to him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed you ; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, That you which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that has forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life” (Matt.19:27-29 KJV). See also Lk.22:28-30.
The prophet Ezekiel recorded that, after the return of the Messiah, David will again assume his kingly duties in a rulership capacity over Israel:
“Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwelling-places, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God. And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. And they shall dwell in the land that I have given to Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever” (Ezk.37:23-25 KJV). See also Jer.30:8-11; Ezk.34:22-24.
For all of the prophecies concerning the throne of David to be fulfilled there must always be a descendant from David's royal bloodline alive on earth.
Evidence of God's Promise
“And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, This says the Lord ; If you can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister to me. Moreover, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, Consider you not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the Lord has chosen, he has even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them. This says the Lord ; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth ; Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them” (Jer.33:19-26 KJV).
God has kept his promise to David that one of his descendants would always be the lawful ruler of Israel. The moon, and stars still exist and they continue in their respective orbits, and there are millions of King David's descendants and Levites on earth. God is still honoring his promise to king David to maintain one of his descendants as the lawful ruler of the kingdom of Israel and expand the population of the Levites throughout the earth. The question is not whether the royal descendants of David and the Levites exist on earth; the question is who and where are the descendants of David and the Levites.
The Destruction of National Israel
In order to clearly understand where the throne of David is located and who and where the Israelites are today, one must understand that national Israel as it existed under king David and king Solomon became a major regional military power with great wealth and prosperity, but this great nation came to a sudden end and became two separate nations after Solomon's death. Although Solomon was very wise, he did not always make the right choices. His choices concerning his marriage to many foreign women led him into worshiping their gods which resulted in the destruction of national Israel after his death:
“The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord , the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord 's command. So the Lord said to Solomon, ”Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son. Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen" (1.Kgs.11:9-13 NIV).
David's descendants did cease to rule over the whole kingdom of Israel and the tribes of Israel did cease to exist as a single nation. And after the death of Solomon, the leaders of all the tribes of Israel came to Shechem and attempted to make Solomon's son Rehoboam king of Israel. However, they were not successful because of Solomon's rebellion against God.
2.Chronicles 10:1-19 NIV
Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all the Israelites had gone there to make him king. When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: “Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.” Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people went away" (vs.1-5).
Here, Jeroboam asks for relief from the taxes, tribute, and labor conscription that were required while Solomon was king.
Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked. They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.”But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, 'Lighten the yoke your father put on us'?”The young men who had grown up with him replied, “Tell the people who have said to you, 'Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter'– tell them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist. My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions” (vs.6-11).
Rehoboam made a fatal decision in not listening to the council of the elders who clearly understood that the proper response would ensure the people's loyalty to the young king:
Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite. When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king: “What share do we have in David, what part in Jesse's son? To your tents, O Israel! Look after your own house, O David!” So all the Israelites went home. But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them. King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day" (vs.12-19).
Two Separate Nations
The separation of the northern tribes from the southern tribe of Judah resulted in the formation of two separate nations: The House of Judah under king Rehoboam and the House of Israel under king Jeroboam. Biblical prophecy clearly shows that all the tribes of national Israel will not be reunited into a single nation until after Christ's return. Until that time, the tribes of Israel will remain separated into their various national identities.
The House of Judah
Because the temple of God was located in Jerusalem, which is within the boundaries of Judea, the tribe of Judah, the priesthood, most of the Levites, and many from the tribe of Benjamin remained loyal to Rehoboam. The people who are considered Jews today are predominantly a mixture of the tribes of Judah, Levi, and Benjamin.
The House of Israel
The northern tribes who followed Jeroboam became known as the House of Israel and formed their own government, worship system, and religious center in Samaria.
Although there are people from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi (i.e., the House of Judah) scattered among the tribal nations of Israel, the House of Israel is not Jewish. The ten tribal nations of Israel are predominantly comprised of the eight single tribes of Asher, Dan, Gad, Issachar, Nephtali, Ruben, Simeon, Zebulun, and the two tribes of Joseph—Ephraim and Manasseh. These ten tribal nations are the peoples who are commonly called the lost tribes of Israel.
David's Descendants Today
It is a fact that no descendant of king David sits on a throne ruling over the Jewish nation of Israel today. Moreover, none of his descendants rule over the combined tribes of the House of Israel. Therefore, unless God has broken his promise to king David, we must look elsewhere for his royal descendants. Remember that God only promised that his bloodline would not disappear, not that one of his descendants would always actively occupy a throne over a sovereign nation of Israel comprised of all the tribes.
The fact that the Kingdom of Israel does not occupy the Promised Land today and a descendant of king David has not always occupied a literal throne over a functioning civil government of Israel does not mean that David's royal bloodline ceased to exist. The historical record clearly shows that almost all the royal families of Europe are related in one way or another to the royal house of David through marriage.
The historical record clearly shows that descendants of David's royal family are alive today and that whoever occupies the British throne has the scepter of Judah and is the only lawful ruler of the Kingdom of Israel. But, how can a monarch of national Israel rule when there is no territory, no active government, and no subjects to rule over? The answer is that the monarch maintains the office of rulership while in exile from the homeland and waits for the kingdom to be reestablished.
National Israel still exists today. The land that God gave to Israel still exists although it is mostly occupied by foreigners. Israel's lawful government still exists, but its monarch is in exile. Israel's laws still exist and are codified in the Torah. And there are hundreds of millions of Israelites scattered throughout the world. National Israel exists today, but its monarch and most of its citizens are in exile waiting to be returned to their homeland after the Messiah returns to establish God's government on earth.
The Messiah and the House of Israel
Although the Messiah was born a Jew and taught in Judea, his primary mission was not to the House of Judah; it was to the ten tribes of the House of Israel:
“A woman of Canaan came and beseeched him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord , you Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he did not reply to her. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, Send her away; for she cries out to us. But he replied, I am only sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then she came and worshiped him, saying, Lord , help me. But he said, It is not fitting to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, This is true Lord : yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. Then Jesus replied to her and said, O woman, your faith is great: let it be as you have asked. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour” (Matt.15:22-26 KJV Para.).
There is credible evidence that, in his efforts to reach out to the lost tribes of Israel, Jesus traveled with his uncle Joseph who was an international merchant involved in the tin trade in the British Isles. This situation allowed Jesus ample opportunity to visit many major population centers of the ten tribes of the House of Israel during the eighteen years prior to the beginning of his ministry in Judea. A major misconception is that the House of Israel was physically lost; however, Jesus was speaking about them being spiritually lost because of their acceptance and practice of pagan worship systems.
The Jews rejected Christ's teaching and murdered him and the House of Judah still rejects him and his message today. Moreover, the ten tribes of the House of Israel who are scattered throughout the world have rejected him by accepting a false Christ, a different gospel message, and a perverted form of God's worship system.
Go to the House of Israel
Another clue to locating the tribes of Israel today is tracing the travels of Christ and the apostles on their various journeys to preach the Father's good news message to these tribes. The Messiah said that he was sent to the lost sheep of the House of Israel and he told his twelve disciples to preach the Kingdom of God to the House of Israel. After choosing twelve men and teaching them his heavenly Father's good news message, he commissioned them to go to the ten tribes of the House of Israel with this same message:
“These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter you not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matt.10:5-7 KJV).
It can be assumed that the twelve men carried out these instructions to some degree during Christ's ministry. Moreover, it is a historical fact that after Christ's death the apostles began a concentrated effort to preach the Kingdom of God and the message of salvation in great power. Moreover, as they went about proclaiming the Father's good news message to the world (Mk.16:14-20), they probably continued to proclaim it to the tribes of the House of Israel.
The historical record of the apostles' travels as they carried out their mission to preach the Father's good news message to the ten tribes of the House of Israel identifies many of the geographic locations where these tribes lived.
The book of Acts and the epistles document some of the apostles' travels, and secular history, tradition, and legend contain much information showing that the apostles did indeed travel to areas known to be inhabited with vast numbers of the descendants of Israel's ten tribes. These areas included Armenia, Asia Minor, France, the British Isles, the island of Patmos, Rome, Syria, North Africa, India, Persia, Ethiopia, Turkey, Greece, Southern Arabia, Spain, and the area formerly known as the Soviet Union.
Although much of what is recorded in tradition and legend concerning the travels of the apostles must be viewed with some scepticism and some of the accounts may not be true, most of what is recorded in secular history is most likely true. Moreover, there is no doubt that the apostles took the Father's good news message to the ten tribes of the House of Israel as they were instructed by Jesus.
NATIONAL ISRAEL TODAY
In order to help make the meaning of end-time prophecies more clear, this section contains a list of the nations that contain major concentrations of Israelites. Research indicates that the Israelites are among the world's wealthiest nations and occupy the world's choicest realestate, and that God will make very sure that these nations have the Father's good news message proclaimed to them before Christ's return.
The following is a list of the tribes of Israel
and their possible national identities today. This information is based on historical
and linguistic evidence. Because biblical prophecy clearly shows that descendants
of all the tribes are also scattered throughout the world's non-Israelitish
nations, the individual Twelve Tribes cannot be identified with absolute certainty.
Nevertheless, available information seems to support the following analysis
(See Reference Works section):
Asher = Republic of South Africa: Gen. 49:20
Benjamin = Norway: Gen. 49:27
Dan = Ireland: Gen. 49:16-18
Gad = Germany: Gen. 49:19
Issachar = Finland:
Judah = Israel (Jews): Gen. 49:8-12, also scattered in other nations
Levi = Scattered among other Israelitish nations general: Gen. 49:5-7
Naphthali = Sweden: Gen. 49:21
Reuben = France: Gen. 49:3-4
Simeon = Scattered among other Israelitish nations general: Gen. 49:5-7
Zebulon = Holland: Gen. 49:13
The most dominant Tribes of Israel today are Ephraim and Manasseh. Together these two nations hold most of the world's wealth and military power.
Although many books have been written concerning who the Ten Tribes of Israel are and where they are located today, we suggest the following books as a good beginning point for any detailed study into this subject.
Within the following books you will find concise reviews and historical documentation of the early beginnings of national Israel through to its division into the Houses of Judah and Israel and their current national identities, along with the travels of the 12 apostles as they proclaimed God the Father's good news message.
Although each author approaches these subjects from a slightly different perspective, the documentation provided when viewed as a whole proves beyond doubt that the Creator God has kept and is keeping his promise to Abraham concerning his descendants.
